Mission Santa Clara

Santa Clara de Asís was founded on January 12, 1777 and was the first mission in California to honor a female saint, Saint Claire of Assisi, a 13th century Italian nun. Also known as Mission Santa Clara, this is the site of the first and oldest university in California, Santa Clara University, which was founded in 1851. An active Roman Catholic Church in the Diocese of San José. Since 1851, it has been the spiritual center of what is now the University of Santa Clara.

Weddings have to be scheduled by calling the Mission office at 408-554-4023 or by visiting the wedding page on the Mission website. A year-and-a-half notice is strongly recommended. This is a popular place for weddings by those who have attended Santa Clara University and they are given preference.

As a Catholic student chapel within the Diocese of San Jose, CA, Mission Santa Clara hosts Roman Catholic weddings for current students, faculty, staff, or alumni of Santa Clara University.  Only weddings within the Roman Catholic rite, wherein one party (either the bride or the groom) is a baptized Catholic, are permitted.

Your Wedding Reception

One of SCU’s best kept secrets, the Mission Gardens can be the perfect location to host your wedding reception.  Adjacent to the Mission Church and Mission Gardens, The Adobe Lodge is prepared to cater a lavish affaire or an inviting cocktail hour right after your ceremony.  With various spaces available, you’re limited only by your own creativity.

The Rehearsal Dinner

Whether your reception is planned at SCU or elsewhere, the Adobe Lodge can also be a great option for your rehearsal dinner as well.  When your group is finished running through your paces at the Mission Church for your rehearsal, a short stroll through the gardens will land you at the Adobe Lodge for dinner.  It’s like having your own private restaurant!
